Doc World | Keep It A Secret | "The Troubles" of Ireland | Season 6 | Episode 1

(music) Northern Ireland was beginning to be torn apart by the conflict known as "The Troubles."

(intense music) - The war was so sectarian.

It was Protestant against Catholic.

(intense music continues) It was the IRA against the UVF.

It was the unionists against the Sinn Feiners.

It was the British against the Irish.

(intense music) [Radio broadcaster] Dawn over Belfast today showed a grim scene: buildings scarred by fire, thousands of pounds worth of damage caused, and, of course, the tragic loss of life.

(music) - The Troubles conflict stems from a very long history of English conquest of Ireland.

After many failed rebellions by the Irish people, the Rebellion of 1921 would lead to the formation of the Republic of Ireland.

But the imperfect Treaty of 1921 would divide the island between Northern Ireland, under English control, and the Republic of Ireland.
