“90年代是香港同志运动发展的重要阶段，社会上开始听得到同志的声音。张国荣的情况，可谓与这股思潮相辅相乘，”研究同志文化的香港大学社会系副教授江绍祺向BBC中文表示。
虽然如此，社会上的歧见仍未消除。

到1997年，张国荣与梁朝伟合演王家伟导演的《春光乍泄》，以一对同志恋人避走他乡的爱情故事，隐喻香港人在回归前夕的身份迷惘；电影在全球范围引起很大回响，是历来最知名的亚洲同志电影之一。
近年曾凭多部同志影片作品，获得国际影展奖项及提名的香港青年导演洪荣杰向BBC中文说，《春光乍泄》中对同志关系的处理，对他影响甚深。
“《春》的力量在于，讲一个最普通、最符合异性恋想像的爱情故事，但将女性的角色换成男人去演，突然就威胁到主流爱情关系的观念。”

“《春光乍泄》最厉害的，是呈现到原来同志关系是可以这么‘普通’的！放下同性恋或异性恋的框框，就会见到人与人之间真正的感情。”
挑战主流的天王巨星
在电影以外，张国荣在舞台上的演绎，也更加自我、更加大胆。
“过往的香港社会，会将‘中性’视为‘不男不女’，看法十分负面，”江绍祺说，“但张国荣却冲破了这个非黑即白的看法，告诉社会‘亦男亦女’可以是‘正’（好、吸引）。”
1997年复出歌坛的演唱会中，张国荣参考英国歌手大卫·鲍伊（David Bowie，大卫·保儿）的先例，脚踏一双珠片闪灿的红色高跟鞋演唱《红》。
张国荣曾说，“姣、型、靓、寸”（风骚、有型、美丽、高傲）是一个表演者的成功之道。
而比《红》的妖娆表演更惹人注目的，是张在演唱会上将一曲《月亮代表我的心》献给“两位我挚爱的人”——向母亲致意后，张再揭示另一人的身份： “我生命中很重要的一位好朋友……唐先生（唐鹤德）。”
